The Susquehanna Regional Airport Authority owns and operates a wastewater treatment facility at the Harrisburg International Airport that discharges treated effluent to a tributary of the Susquehanna River. Expansion plans for the airport and the Air National Guard will result in an increase of wastewater flow that exceeds the existing facility’s capacity. Hoyle, Tanner designed a new wastewater treatment facility that was constructed approximately 1,600 feet northeast of the existing facility. The construction of the new facility enabled the existing facility to operate normally during construction. Following start-up of the new treatment plant the existing facility was demolished for expansion of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. The Harrisburg International Airport’s new wastewater treatment facility is located on the periphery of the PA Air National Guard’s expansion area to minimize potential disruptions during future construction activities and to maintain a secure perimeter around the military facilities.
