Hoyle, Tanner was the prime design professional for a $10 million project to improve electrical, telephone/data, and steam utilities for the UMASS campus and was responsible for overseeing $1 million in engineering services involving geotechnical, mechanical and electrical subconsultants.
The project included structural repairs to severely corroded, buried, existing concrete vaults. Hoyle, Tanner coordinated access with the UMASS Facilities Management and Campus Police, inspected the structural condition of the vaults using personnel certified for confined spaces, collected as-built data for the structures and utilities, developed concrete repair details, designed utility anchorages, specified waterproofing details, provided a detailed cost estimate, and virtually modeled the vaults in three dimensions to make it easier for project participants to understand scope and requirements.
24-hour on-call special inspection services were provided during a scheduled shut-down of the central campus utilities. Our engineers worked with the contractor to enforce design requirements, and to respond field conditions as needed to keep the project on schedule.
