Project Summary

Hoyle, Tanner was selected by the Town of Swanzey for the design of the wooden Slate Covered Bridge under the NHDOT Municipally Managed Bridge program. The original bridge was lost to arson in 1993. Hoyle, Tanner provided engineering design services for the new bridge including Town Lattice trusses, floor beams and floor decking, roof rafters and purlins, and cross bracing. The new bridge was designed for an HS15 (15 Ton) live load, five times that of the original. Hoyle, Tanner also provided inspection and evaluation of existing stone abutments for reuse.

Fire detection and protection systems were designed for the new bridge to protect it from arson. These systems include a fire retardant paint, fire detection system, and sprinkler system.

Hoyle, Tanner assisted the Town with bidding of the project. We provided part-time resident engineering services throughout construction including inspection, invoicing, and shop drawing review. The project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule.

Hoyle, Tanner personnel presented a paper on this project at the International Bridge Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.
