Project Summary

MassDOT selected Hoyle, Tanner to design a replacement bridge, as the existing bridge was structurally deficient and rehabilitation was not practical. The existing 26 foot single-span steel stringer bridge was nearly 60 years old and in poor condition. The bridge abutments are being undermined with both footings exposed.

Hoyle, Tanner designed a 9.7m long precast concrete rigid frame replacement structure suitable for HS25 Live Load capacity. The roadway design included rural drainage, driveway tie-ins and a traffic management plan. Additionally, the protection of the Barrens Strawberry, a local endangered plant species, during construction served as a unique aspect of the project. Administrated through the Mass DOT’s Accelerated Bridge Program (ABP), the project included a temporary pedestrian bridge due to the bridge being closed to all traffic during construction.
