Project Summary

Hoyle, Tanner provided conceptual, preliminary and final designs, and construction documents for the relocation of the Airport Entrance Road at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport for the City of Manchester. The goals of this project were to: improve vehicle access to the airport, which had deteriorated due to the airport’s recent, rapid growth; provide sufficient capacity to meet the needs of the airport’s future growth; provide for a connection to the NHDOT airport access road linking the F.E. Everett Turnpike; and to allow construction of a taxiway to the Runway 6 end. The entrance road was lowered to allow the taxiway to be constructed on a bridge over the roadway. Hoyle, Tanner produced and evaluated more than ten possible alignments and intersection configurations. Variations in the taxiway alignment and taxiway bridge location and span were also evaluated.

This project consisted of two phases and three construction projects. The phasing was necessary for the maintenance of traffic to and from the airport and on Brown Avenue, which is a major north-south route for commuters between Manchester, Londonderry, and Litchfield.

The design of this entire project included the review of the Airport’s Master Drainage Plan and the design of a storm water system for the current project as well as analyzing the full build out scenario. The storm water design provided for open and closed systems with the storm water being treated within an extended dry detention basin before being discharged to a new outfall in the Merrimack River. The lowering of the roadway grade required the implementation of an extensive under drain system. The presence of hazardous contaminants in the groundwater required the under drain system to be designed to provide for the separation and treatment of the ground water before discharge from the system. Provisions were made for continuation of the groundwater treatment after completion of the construction if necessary.
