Union Covered Bridge (Built 1867)

Thetford, Vermont

The Union Village Covered Bridge was rehabilitated to repair rotted members and to double the bridge’s live load capacity.

Due to the length of the detour around the bridge, a H20 (20 Ton) live load capacity was required.

The existing structure is the original bridge to be built at this location.

Hoyle, Tanner  designed four supplemental longitudinal glulam stringers that work in conjunction with the bridge trusses to provide a 20 ton capacity. The stringers are supported on new concrete foundations and all additions can be removed at a later date to return the bridge to its original appearance.
