Hoyle, Tanner Working with UNH Student Team on Capstone Project

Bridge and Structures Group Manager Matthew J. Low, P.E. and Project Manager Jason T. Lodge, P.E. of Hoyle, Tanners Manchester, New Hampshire office are working with a team of University of New Hampshire Civil Engineering seniors on their senior project, also known as a Capstone Project.  The student team will be working on their own design of the Lyndeborough Road Bridge Replacement in New Boston, New Hampshire.  Hoyle, Tanner did the design and construction engineering for the Town of New Boston through the New Hampshire Department of Transportation Municipally-Managed Bridge Aid Program in 2009 and 2010.  The replacement bridge was constructed by Cold River Bridges in 2010.

The UNH team of six students will be provided with the base plan survey, hydraulic information, soil boring information and other project design criteria to prepare their own design.  A series of check-point meetings will be held in the spring 2011 semester with Hoyle, Tanner personnel to guide the team, however, the design will be the responsibility of the student team.  A final design presentation will be held near the end of the semester where the student team can present their design for critique by the professional engineering team.  Hoyle, Tanner will then present the actual design which was eventually constructed to the students so that a comparison can be made between the designs.  We are excited for this opportunity to work with an energetic team of future engineers.  It is our belief that this exercise will not only be a valuable learning experience for the students, but for the professionals as well.
